How Long Does a Garage Door Opener Last?

There is no single number. How long an opener lasts depends on the model and how often you use it. It also depends on the state of the door.

A rough range

Installers often quote about ten to fifteen years for a typical home opener. Some last longer. Some fail sooner. Treat that as a general guide and not a promise.

What shortens its life

Signs it is wearing out

  • It runs louder than before.
  • The door starts and stops or moves in jerks.
  • The remote works only close to the door.
  • The light or the buttons act up.
  • Gears or the chain or belt show wear.

Repair or replace

A worn part can often be replaced. An old opener that keeps failing may not be worth another repair. A new opener can add quieter operation and battery backup and better safety features. See chain vs belt vs screw drive openers and how much horsepower an opener needs.

Check the door first

A new opener will not fix a door that is out of balance. Have the springs checked first. See our page on garage door spring repair.
