Garage Door Remote Not Working? What to Check First

A garage door remote that stops working is a common problem. The cause is often small. Work through the checks below in order. Most take only a few minutes.

Test the wall button first

Press the button on the wall. The result tells you where to look.

  • If the door moves with the wall button the opener works. The problem is the remote.
  • If the wall button does nothing the problem is the opener power or the safety sensors or the door itself.

Check the remote

  • Replace the battery. Small batteries weaken over time. The type is printed on the battery or in the remote manual.
  • Try a second remote or the keypad. If another one works the first remote is faulty.
  • Press the button from a few feet away. If it works up close range is the issue.
  • Look at the button itself. A worn button may not send a signal.

Cold weather drains small batteries faster. In winter the battery is the first thing to check.

Check for signal trouble

The remote sends a radio signal to the motor unit. A few things can weaken it.

  • Find the antenna wire that hangs from the motor unit. Make sure it is not bent or cut.
  • Some LED bulbs create interference near the opener. If the trouble started after a bulb change try a different bulb.
  • Large metal objects close to the motor unit can weaken the signal.

Check the wall control for a lock setting

Many wall controls have a lock button. When it is on the opener ignores remotes. Some manuals call it vacation mode. Check your manual for how to turn it off.

Reprogram the remote

Most openers have a learn button on the motor unit. The steps differ by brand and model. Find the model number on the motor unit and read the manual for that model. Use a stable ladder. Do not touch the springs or cables near the door.

A remote must be compatible with the opener. An older remote may not pair with a newer opener.

When the remote is not the problem

If the door will not move at all do not force it. Learn how to use the manual release handle safely first.
