Can You Paint a Garage Door? Prep, Paint and Timing
Yes you can paint most garage doors. Steel and wood doors take paint well when the surface is clean and sound. Vinyl and some fiberglass doors need extra care with color choice. Good prep matters more than the paint brand.
Check the door first
Paint will not fix a damaged door. Look for deep rust or soft wood. Check panels that no longer line up. If the door is worn out a new one may be a better use of money. Our guide on when to replace a garage door can help you decide.
Prepare the surface
- Wash the door with mild soap and water. Our garage door cleaning guide covers the steps. Let it dry fully.
- Scrape loose paint and sand rough spots.

- Fill small dents or holes if the material allows.
- Apply a primer made for the door material. Bare steel and bare wood need one.
Choose the right paint
Use a quality exterior paint made for the door material. Satin and semi gloss finishes are common because they wipe clean. On vinyl doors very dark colors can absorb heat and may warp the panels. Check the door maker before choosing a color.
Timing in New England
Paint on a dry day with mild temperatures. The can lists the lowest temperature it should be used at. Avoid cold mornings and damp evenings. Plan for spring or early fall.

Painting moving parts can make them stick and may hide wear you should see.
Let it cure before closing
Leave the door open until the paint is dry to the touch. A wet door can stick to the seal or to the jamb when you close it. Fresh paint also takes time to harden so avoid wiping it for a few days.
