When to Replace a Garage Door Instead of Repairing It
Most garage door problems can be repaired. Some cannot. This guide helps you decide.
When repair makes sense
- One part is broken. A spring or cable or roller or hinge can be replaced.
- The panels are straight and solid.
- The door is not very old.
- The problem is new and not a pattern.
When replacement makes sense
- Several panels are cracked or rotted or badly rusted.
- The door has been repaired again and again.
- Parts for your door are hard to find.
- The door is out of line after an impact.
- You want better insulation or a quieter door.
- The door looks worn and hurts the look of the house.
Questions to ask yourself
- How old is the door?
- Is the damage in one part or in the whole door?
- How often has it needed work?
- Is the garage heated or used as a workspace?
- Do you plan to sell the house soon?
Ask for a clear explanation
A good technician will tell you what is wrong and show you the damage. Ask what a repair will fix and what it will not. Ask what could fail next. If you are told to replace the door ask why. If you are not sure ask for a second opinion.
How we handle it
We repair first. We suggest a new door only when repair no longer makes sense. Read about new garage door installation if you are leaning that way. For a single broken part see our pages on spring replacement and cable repair.
