Dented Garage Door Panel: Repair or Replace?

A small shallow dent in a garage door panel is often cosmetic and can be left alone or filled and painted. A sharp crease or a crack is different. It weakens the panel and can stop the door moving smoothly. In that case repair the panel or replace it.

Cosmetic dents or structural damage

Run your hand over the dent. A soft round dent with no sharp fold is usually surface damage. A crease with a hard line has bent the metal. A crack or a split seam has weakened the panel.

Also check the hinges and rollers near the damage. A hit can bend them and cause binding. Our guide to hinge wear signs can help you spot that.

What the material changes

Steel can crease. Wood can split. Fiberglass can crack. Our materials comparison explains how each one reacts.

Options for repair

  • Leave a small shallow dent as it is
  • Fill and repaint minor damage
  • Replace one panel section if a matching one is available
  • Replace the whole door if panels are no longer made or many are damaged

Older doors are harder to match. A new section may not fit the design or color of the others.

When to replace the door

If the door is old and has several damaged panels a new door may cost less in the long run. Read when to replace a garage door for the signs. Rust can also be a factor. See rust causes and prevention.

Do not ignore a creased panel

A creased panel can twist under load and strain the opener. It may also let the door jam in the tracks. Keep the opener off and move the door by hand if you notice binding.

Our garage door panel repair page explains how we assess damage. If a full replacement looks likely see new garage door installation.
