How to Program a Garage Door Remote or Keypad
Most garage door openers pair with a remote or keypad through a learn button on the motor unit. You press that button once and then press the remote or enter a code within a short time. The exact steps vary by brand so keep your manual handy.
What you need before you start
- A step ladder that holds your weight
- A fresh battery in the remote or keypad
- The opener model number from the label on the motor unit
- A clear view of the door so nothing is in its path
Basic steps for a remote
- Stand on the ladder and find the learn button on the back or side of the motor unit. It sits near the antenna wire and is often a small square button.
- Press and release it once. Do not hold it down. Holding it can erase every code stored in the opener.
- Within about 30 seconds on many models press the button you want to use on the remote. Check your manual for the exact window.
- Watch for the opener lights to blink or listen for a click. That tells you it accepted the code.
- Step away from the door and press the remote button. The door should move.
Basic steps for a keypad
The sequence is similar. Press the learn button and then enter your chosen PIN on the keypad. Finish by pressing the enter key. Some brands ask you to press enter first. The manual for your model gives the right order.
Cars with a built-in remote
A car button works through the same learn process. The opener may need you to press learn and then the car button. Some newer openers use a different method for car systems so read the section for your model.
Erase old codes when you lose a remote
If a remote is lost or stolen you can clear all codes and start over. Hold the learn button until the light goes out. Then program only the remotes you still have. Our garage door security tips explain why this is worth doing.
When programming does not work
If the opener will not accept a remote the cause may be a weak battery or a wrong remote type. A dead receiver in the opener is also possible. Our guide on why a garage door remote stops working walks through each cause. For a faulty receiver see our opener repair page.
