How Much Horsepower Does a Garage Door Opener Need?

Opener motors are sold by horsepower. Higher numbers sound better. They are not always better for your door.

What the opener really does

The springs lift the door. The opener only moves it along the track. If the springs are right the opener needs very little force. A strong opener cannot fix a weak spring or a door that is out of balance.

Typical choices

  • Standard residential openers handle most single and double doors.
  • Heavier doors such as wood or fully insulated doors may do better with a stronger motor.
  • Very large doors or tall doors may need more power.

Read the label carefully

Some makers advertise peak horsepower. That is a short burst figure. It does not tell you how the opener runs day to day. Compare the lifting capacity and the warranty instead.

Other things to compare

  • Motor type. DC motors tend to run quieter and start slowly.
  • Drive type. Read chain vs belt vs screw drive openers.
  • Safety features. Look for working sensors.
  • Battery backup if you want the door to work in an outage.

Do not skip the balance check

A door that is out of balance makes any opener work harder. Have the springs checked first. See our page on opener installation.
