Why Does My Garage Door Open by Itself?
A garage door that opens on its own is usually caused by a stuck wall button or a remote pressed by accident. Radio interference is another cause. A failing control board is possible but less common.
Treat it as a security issue until you find the cause. The door may be open while nobody is home.
Check the simple causes first
Start with what you can see and test in a few minutes.
- Remotes: a remote in a coat pocket or bag can press its own button. So can one clipped to a car visor.
- Wall button: a button that sticks or has moisture behind it can send a steady signal.
- Keypad: worn or wet keypad buttons can register presses nobody made.
Test the wall button and its wire
The wall button connects to the opener by a thin low voltage wire. A pinched wire or worn insulation can make the opener act as if the button is held down.
- Unplug the opener from its outlet.
- Disconnect the two wall button wires at the opener terminals.
- Plug the opener back in and use only a remote for a day or two.
- If the door stops moving on its own the button or its wire is the cause.
A new wall button is a simple swap. A damaged wire inside a wall needs a technician.
Remotes and radio interference
Take the battery out of every remote and keypad. Add them back one at a time over several days. This finds a remote that is sending a signal.
Nearby radio devices can also confuse an opener receiver. Older openers with fixed codes are more open to this than rolling code models. If you lose a remote or doubt one clear the opener memory and program only the ones you trust. Our guide to programming a remote or keypad shows how.
When the control board is the cause
If the door still moves with the wall button disconnected and every battery out the logic board is the likely cause. Boards can fail with age or after a power surge.
Compare the cost of a board repair with the age of the opener. Our article on how long a garage door opener lasts helps with that choice. Our opener repair page explains what we check.
Keep the home secure meanwhile
Unplug the opener until it is fixed. If the door moves easily and stays balanced you can close it by hand with the release handle. Our manual release guide shows where it is. More ideas are in our garage door security tips.
