Garage Door Sensor Blinking: What It Means and How to Fix It

A blinking garage door sensor usually means the invisible beam between the two eyes is blocked or the eyes no longer point at each other. Dirt and a loose bracket are the most common causes. A damaged wire is the next one to check.

What the sensors do

Two small eyes sit on either side of the door about six inches above the floor. One sends a beam and the other receives it. If something breaks the beam the door will not close or it reverses. This is a safety feature so do not disable it.

Check the lights

Many sensors show a steady light when they are lined up. A blinking or dark light often points to a problem. The meaning of each light varies by brand so check your manual. Then work through these checks.

  1. Clear anything from the path. A box or a stray tool can block the beam.
  2. Wipe each lens with a soft dry cloth. Spider webs and dust can break the signal.
  3. Look at both brackets. If one has been bumped it may point away from the other eye. Loosen it a little and turn it until the light turns steady. Then tighten it.
  4. Check for sun. Strong light shining straight into one eye can confuse it. Shade the lens with a short tube or a piece of card.
  5. Follow the wire from each eye to the opener. Look for cuts or staples that pinch it.

Test after the fix

Once the lights are steady close the door with the remote. Then run the check in our guide to testing the auto reverse. The door should reverse when it touches an object.

If the lights stay off or blink

A dead eye or a broken wire needs repair. A worn opener board can also cause the same signs. Do not hold the wall button to force the door shut as a long term fix. That skips a safety feature. If the door also reverses without a cause read why a garage door reverses by itself. Our opener repair and sensor service covers the rest.
